Offshore Adventure Certification Fees
Because some people wish to participate in our Offshore Sailing Adventires for the experience without necessarily wishing to obtain official ASA or Sail Canada certification, our pricing structure for these passages includes a Base Participation Fee plus a Certification Fee for each credential sought.
Below are the fees applicable to various certifications. In general, these fees cover instructor time for coaching and marking exams, as well as the fees that ASA or Sail Canada charge for processing certifications (but not the membership fee which may need to be paid prior to certification if it has expired.). Certification fees must normally be paid at the time of booking or before leaving the base. The fees do not include ASA or other textbooks that a participant can purchase directly from ASA, as ebooks from your favourite ebook platform, or from other sources. They do include guidance materials that your instructor will provide, and in some cases, include access to online content from LearnToCruiseOnline.ca
ASA 108 or Sail Canada Offshore Cruising Certification: $400
For most Sailing Adventures meeting ASA or Sail Canada criteria as an offshore passage, experienced sailors may seek Offshore certification. In contrast to most sailing courses, Offshore Cruising involves a major pre-course activity that leads the participant through all aspects of planning for a significant offshore passage. (When Rob McLean did his Offshore Ashore Knowledge assignment, it totalled 65 pages.) Your instructor will be available to coach you through this assignment, mark it when complete, and provide detailed feedback.
ASA 106 or Sail Canada Advanced Cruising Certification: $300
For most Sailing Adventures, experienced sailors may challenge Advanced certification. This fee includes access to our Advanced Cruising Online Module delivered through LearnToCruiseOnline.ca, marking and providing feedback on the ASA 106 or Sail Canada Advanced Cruising exams, and appropriate coaching and evaluation while on the passage.
ASA 105 or Sail Canada Intermediate Coastal Navigation Certification: $150
The fee for ASA 105 or Sail Canada Intermediate Coastal Navigation includes coaching while you self-study using the recommended resources as described in BOSS Coastal Self-Study Guidance, practical guidance in tracking and determining position using Coastal Navigation techniques while on the passage, and marking and providing feedback on the official exam. Participants must provide their own copy of relevant training chart for exam purposes.
ASA 107 Celestial Navigation Certification: $250
There is not time on a passage to teach Celestial Navigation from scratch: instead, BOSS offers a BOSS Celestial Guidance Document to help you meet the Celestial Navigation prerequisites:
The fee for ASA 107 Certification includes coaching while you self-study, practical guidance in taking and reducing sights while on the passage, and marking and providing feedback on the ASA 107 exam. Participants must provide their own copy of the NGA 925 Position Plotting Sheet.
ASA 117 Basic Celestial Certification: $150
The fee for ASA 117 Certification includes coaching while you self-study using the recommended text as described in BOSS Celestial Guidance , practical guidance in taking and reducing sights while on your Offshore Course, and marking and providing feedback on the ASA 117 exam.
Sail Canada Celestial Certification: NA
At present, BOSS is not able to offer Sail Canada Celestial Navigation certification, but can refer you to a qualified Sail Canada instructor with whom you can challenge the exam. Options for obtaining this are discussed in BOSS Celestial Guidance .
ASA 114 or Sail Canada Catamaran Endorsement: $150
If the Sailing Adventure takes place on a Catamaran, ASA 114 or Sail Canada Catamaran Endorsement may be available. The fee includes marking and providing feedback on the ASA 114 or Sail Canada Catamaran Endorsement exam, and appropriate coaching and evaluation while on the passage.
Challenging ASA 101, 103, 104, Sail Canada Basic or Intermediate Cruising: $150 each
