    Introducing ASA 101 or Sail Canada Basic Cruising

BOSS Beginner Course (1-3 days)

 $350/day pp or $1000 pp for 3 days

10% discount if enrolled in a BOSS week-long course

The BOSS beginner course is offered roughly once per month.  It is designed to provide sailors with no previous sailing experience with an introduction to sailing basics before they join one of our week-long courses in the Grenadines.  Beginning sailors are encouraged to travel to SVG a few days early to spend 1-3 days participating in our Beginner course, learning on Saltfish, a J-24 sailboat.

The course schedule for a 3 day course (recommended) is as follows:

  • Thursday: 0900-1700
  • Friday: 0900-1700
  • Saturday: 0900-1500

Participants may reserve a room at the Barefoot base if one is available, or stay at a local hotel.  There will be a break for lunch each day.

The course will cover most of the afloat skills defined in ASA 101 Basic Keelboat, or Sail Canada Basic Cruising.  Any afloat skills not covered in the Beginner Course will be addressed in your week-long monohull or catamaran course beginning on Sunday.

NOTE: Prices above are USD per person.  There is a 2-person minimum to book the course.  Maximum capacity is 4 students plus the instructor

Course Outline

  • The J-24 is a responsive small keelboat steered with a tiller, and is an excellent platform for learning the basics of sailing.
  • The course will start in the classroom for an orientation to sailing in a small keelboat, and then progress on to Saltfish.  You will leearn how to rig the boat, how to manoeuvre the boat under mainsail and jib, first separately and then together.
  • We will be sailing in mainly protected waters in the vicinity of the Barefoot base.

Course Objectives

  • Learn the basics!

    Through the BOSS Beginner course, we we will start from the very beginning and learn the basics.

  • Practice Makes Perfect

    As we learn to the basics of sailing on this course, you will learn to safety act as crew and skipper of a small tiller-steered keelboat.

  • Progress toward formal Certification

    The course is curriculum is designed to help you make progress toward earning your ASA 101 Basic Keelboat certification, or Sail Canada Basic Cruising certification.   Any skills not covered in the Beginner course will be addressed during your week-long cruise in the Grenadines.

  • Fully-equipped yacht with ASA or Sail Canada Instructor
  • ASA Log book

Does not include:

  • Air fare and ground transfers
  • Accommodation and food
  • ASA Membership – $59 per person (if not already held)
  • Examination and certification fees, if passed – $45 each
  • Instructor gratuity at your discretion
